First Thursday Artist Reception: Color & Place

Color and Place: Opening Reception May First, 6-9PM
Color is an essential element in an artist’s toolkit. It is a physical phenomenon of reflected light and visual perception that influences our moods, energy, and even our appetites.
In this exhibit, painters Lorrie Fink, Judy Levit, and Jane Norling use color to depict their encounters and experiences in the places they have visited, both in exterior environments and in their imaginations. For more than a decade, these three local artists have engaged in an exchange of ideas about making art and navigating the creative process. During this time, they have shared studio space and frequent commentary, as each artist continues to develop a personal response to the world around us.
Oakland painter Lorrie Fink uses the attitude and expressiveness of botanical forms to examine the human psyche. Through color and gesture, she conveys the exuberance and resilience of things that grow wildly without invitation or cultivation, from the edges of wilderness areas to her own backyard.
Judy Levit is a California painter whose drawings, mixed media paintings and collages explore inner worlds and reflect her reverence for nature. Her work as a psychotherapist informs and enhances her investigations of internal landscapes and conversations.
Jane Norling is a painter, graphic artist and muralist active in Bay Area cultural venues since 1970. Her landscapes—real and imagined—explore the relationship of water to land, the sensation of moving through locations of vast natural beauty and the marks of human habitation there.
All three artists are participating in East Bay Open Studios 2014, and welcome you to visit their nearby studios during the first two weekends of June.
